President Barak Obama's message to Robert Mugabe
E-mail this story to a friend  Printer friendly view of this page
"To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history, but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist," Obama said.

Barak Obama is young enough to be Mugabe's son. I'm sure Mugabe wont dismiss what Barak is telling him as the ravings of a young and inexperienced gun. History is not on Mugabe's side. The old and worn out story of blaming the West for the economic mismanagement, the corruption and nepotism Mugabe has visited on our poor country over the last ten years cannot be forgiven.

Zimbabweans will not enjoy prosperity under Mugabe at all or under ZANU(P.F.). The promise Obama made to the poor nations will remain a distant promise as long as the authoritarian Mugabe remains in power with his ZANU(P.F.) henchmen.

"To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world's resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it."

These are the words of a new world based not on ideology and smalll mindedness but pragmatism. These are the words from which world citizens received hope after Obama's inauguration as thee USA's 44th president.

Was Mugabe clenching his fist as he listened to this young man's speech  Was he gnashing his teeth?

Very few people in Mugabe's cabinet are 47/8 years old. All of them are way past fifty, way past fifty. They are disdainful of the counsel off youth. How can they bring hope to Zimbabweans?

But despite the suffocating gloom it is not overwhelming. There are still good people working for change.

South Africa
's former president and anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela hailed Obama as "new voice of hope" in a letter to the new leader.

"Your election to this high office has inspired people as few other events in recent times have done," he wrote.

On top of that isn't it an irony of history that Graca machel, Nelson Mandela's wife has denounced Mugabe and his ZANU(P.F.) for abandoning the people of Zimbabwe out of greed and personal aggrandisement?  Mugabe cannot say he is right when even such people as Machel, whose husband provided Mugabe with military bases now want him out.
